Crafted for the caffeine conscious
A note from Will
Our goal is to offer the best decaf and lower caffeine coffees for those who are mindful of their caffeine intake but don't want to compromise on flavour. Where did the idea for Calm Coffee Roastery come from?
In 2017 when working as a civil engineer, I would venture into Borough Market for a coffee at lunch and dream of learning the craft of coffee roasting. Eventually, I worked up the courage and took a job with Monmouth Coffee Company in their Bermondsey roastery as a coffee packer, delivery driver, and occasional barista. After some time, I moved into the roasting team and learned the craft by hard work and repetition - roasting over a tonne of coffee a week, and tasting every roast.
2023 was a busy year in which my wife and I welcomed a daughter into our lives. We both started to pay more attention to our caffeine intake – Sacha mindful of the recommended limits during pregnancy and breastfeeding, myself trying to ensure a precious good night’s sleep wasn’t impeded by the day's caffeine. This was when the idea of Calm Coffee Roastery came to be. I started experimenting with half-caf blends and searching for interesting decaf and lo-caf coffees. I was excited enough by the options I found to start Calm Coffee Roastery and try and share them with you!
The Sourcing
Great tasting coffee, sustainably sourced. We look for quality coffees that taste great, that we can buy year after year.
We are always on the look out for bold tasting decafs that break the mould.
We are a young company but we aspire to live up to the best specialty practices - to build long term relationships and buy large volumes of coffee, paying a sustainable price to dedicated farmers. Currently we do this by working with responsible specialty coffee importers that share our values.
Roasted in Peckham
Roasted in Peckham and shipped throughout the UK. We roast with precision and purpose using the science first approach taught and championed by CoffeeMind.
We keep it simple and label our coffees at 3 roast levels - lighter, medium and darker. If you enjoy more adventurous coffees with higher acidity - try our lighter roasts. Our medium roast coffees offer a balanced brew and darker roasts are for those who want low acidity and classic chocolate and nutty coffee flavour.
Decaf coffees are tricky to roast because the decaffeination process alters their structure, requiring careful application of heat. Our low caffeine variety, Laurina, also presents a challenge due to its long, narrow shape, which makes it difficult to achieve uniform development. Fortunately, roasting is our passion, and we take pride in mastering these challenging coffees.
