How is coffee decaffeinated?
Decaf coffee is made by carefully removing caffeine from green coffee before roasting, while preserving as much of the coffee’s natural flavour as possible.
We work with high-quality specialty coffees and use modern decaffeination methods designed to protect flavour, structure, and sweetness. The result is coffee that tastes great - just without the caffeine.
Why choose decaf coffee?
Decaf isn’t about compromise - it’s about more choice.
Some want coffee later in the day without disrupting sleep. Others are sensitive to caffeine, or simply prefer to enjoy the flavour and ritual of coffee without the stimulant effect.
Well-made decaf allows you to enjoy the comfort, aroma, and complexity of coffee at any time of day.
Decaf Coffee FAQs
Is decaf coffee completely caffeine free?
Not completely. Decaffeination processes can remove most, but not all of the caffeine in coffee. Our decaf coffees are 99.9% caffeine free.
How is the caffeine removed?
Caffeine is removed from the green (unroasted) coffee before roasting using modern decaffeination processes designed to preserve flavour.
These methods focus on gently extracting caffeine while leaving the coffee’s natural characteristics intact.
We currently source two types of decaf:
- Swiss Water Process - A chemical-free method that uses water and green coffee extract to gently remove caffeine while preserving the coffee’s natural flavour compounds.
- Sugarcane EA Process - A natural decaffeination method using ethyl acetate derived from sugarcane to selectively remove caffeine
Does decaf coffee taste different?
Decaffeination is a complex process, and it influences flavour - but that influence doesn’t have to be negative.
When decaf starts with high-quality green coffee and uses modern, carefully controlled processes, much of the coffee’s original flavour and aroma can be preserved. What matters most is the quality of the raw coffee and how it’s roasted.
Handled well, decaf coffee can be sweet, balanced, and expressive — very much in line with what you’d expect from specialty coffee.
Who is decaf coffee for?
- Anyone looking to significantly reduce their caffeine intake
- Coffee drinkers who enjoy coffee later in the day
- People who want the ritual and flavour of coffee, without the stimulant effect
