What is Lo Caf Coffee?

Lo Caf coffees are rare coffees that naturally contain less caffeine than typical arabica varieties. Most arabica coffees contain 1.4% to 1.6% caffeine by weight.

Laurina, a low-caffeine arabica variety, usually contains 0.4% to 0.6% caffeine.

Aramosa, a hybrid of arabica and the low-caffeine species Coffea Racemosa, typically ranges from 0.6% to 1.0%.

Excelsa, a rare species of coffee gaining in popularity due to it's climate resilience, typically has caffeine content of 0.8 to 1.0%.

These coffees are harder to grow. Caffeine helps defend coffee plants against pests - so low caffeine varieties are more delicate and produced in smaller volumes - making them both distinctive and limited in supply.

For our Lo Caf range, we independently lab test the raw (‘green’) coffee for caffeine content before roasting using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) - a common analytical method for accurately measuring compounds in food and drink.

Lo Caf Coffee FAQs

Is Lo Caf the same as decaf?

No. Lo Caf coffees naturally contain less caffeine due to the variety of coffee plant. Decaf coffees have caffeine removed after harvest.

How much caffeine does Lo Caf Coffee contain?

Lo Caf coffees naturally contain significantly less caffeine than typical arabica varieties.

Laurina usually contains around 0.4–0.6% caffeine, which is roughly 60–75% less than standard arabica.

Aramosa typically sits slightly higher, at 0.6–1.0% caffeine, representing a 30–60% reduction.

We lab test each of our Lo Caf coffees, so you can see exactly how much caffeine is in the cup — not just an estimate.

Does lower caffeine mean less flavour?

No! Caffeine itself plays only a small role in how coffee tastes. While caffeine is bitter, it contributes very little to overall flavour compared to factors like variety, terroir, processing, and roast profile.

What really shapes flavour is the quality of the coffee, the care taken in growing and processing it, and how it’s roasted - not the caffeine content.
