A fruity and full bodied natural processed decaf coffee, with tasting notes of cherry, coconut and chocolate.
Sugarcane EA Decaf
Producer: Elias and Shady Bayter
Farm: El Vergel
Variety: Caturra
Process: Natural
Region: Tolima
Elevation: 1450m
Harvest: March-June 2024
The Bayter brothers grow coffee over 100 hectares of land at their estate El Vergel in Fresno, Tolima. In 2018 they started to experiment with natural processed coffees, where the coffee is dried with the seed within the fruit (its more common to produce washed specialty coffees in Colombia). The natural process encourages coffees with a bigger body and more fruity flavours - as well as notes of cherry and coconut, we get a hint of tropical fruits when brewing this coffee.
The coffee undergoes natural processing at El Vergel before being transported to Descafecol, just a short distance away in the neighbouring department of Caldas. Here it undergoes Surgarcane EA decaffeination. The resultant coffee is 99.9% caffeine free - a reduction in caffeine of approximately 90%.
Arabica coffee is approximately 1.1% caffeine by weight and decaffeination can remove most but not all of the caffeine.

The Sugarcane EA Decaffeination Process
-
1. Steaming
The raw coffee undergoes steaming to increase its porosity.
-
2. Soaking and Washing
The coffee beans are placed in tanks with spring water and Ethyl Acetate (EA) derived from the fermentation of sugarcane.
-
3. Caffeine Extraction
The caffeine bonds to the EA molecules, and the liquid in the tank is repeatedly refreshed. The process continues until sufficient caffeine has been removed from the beans.
-
4. Final Steaming and Drying
The beans are removed from the tanks for a final steam removing residual traces of EA. The coffee is then dried and bagged ready for shipping.

What our customers say about our Decaf coffees
Never thought I’d find it but this is a decaf coffee I really enjoy. Only complaint is I drink so much of it i wish it was sold in bigger bags!
I am trialing having less caffeine at the moment and this is really doing the trick, I don't feel like I am missing out on any flavour at all, which in my experience can be the case with decaf.
Trying to cut down on caffeine and this is the ideal coffee. Rich, nuanced not blunt and bitter like so many other dark roast decafs. Proper coffee. Without the buzz.
Lovely dark roasted decaf that hits the caffeine free spot! Loads of caramel and cocoa notes so goes perfect with milk. Can't recommend enough!
