Aramosa is a rare hybrid of two coffee species - Coffea arabica and Coffea racemosa. The racemosa species is native to parts of South Eastern Africa, and was purposefully cross-bred with Arabica because of its natural resistance to coffee leaf rust. It typically contains just 0.6–1.0% caffeine by weight, compared to 1.4-1.6% for regular Arabica coffees.

This lot comes from the Urban family’s Rio Brilhante farm in Minas Gerais, where over 800 hectares are dedicated to coffee and more than 250 workers are employed across harvest seasons.

Cherries are picked and hand-sorted before being fermented aerobically for 36 hours, then dried on patios for 15 days. Grown in mineral-rich volcanic soil at 1000–1150 masl, this Aramosa offers a sweet, gently complex profile with notes of apple, hazelnut and chocolate. A standout coffee in both flavour and function.

What is Low Caf coffee?

Our Low Caf coffees are rare coffees that naturally contain less caffeine than typical arabica varieties. Regular arabica commonly contains around 1.2% to 1.4% caffeine by weight in the raw 'green' coffee.

Laurina, an ultra low-caffeine arabica variety, usually contains 0.4% to 0.6% caffeine.

Aramosa, a hybrid of arabica and the low-caffeine species Coffea Racemosa, typically ranges from 0.6% to 1.0%.

Excelsa, a rare species of coffee gaining in popularity due to it's climate resilience, typically has caffeine content of 0.8 to 1.0%

Laurina and Aramosa are harder to grow. Caffeine helps defend coffee plants against pests - so low caffeine arabica varieties are more delicate and produced in smaller volumes - making them both distinctive and limited in supply. Excelsa is an exception: a naturally lower-caffeine species that's unusually hardy and climate-resilient, which is part of why interest in it is growing.

For our Low Caf coffees we lab test the raw (‘green’) coffee for caffeine content before roasting. Testing is conducted using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) – a widely used analytical technique for separating and quantifying compounds in food and drink.

We roast on Tuesdays and Thursdays and dispatch the following day.
