Excelsa is a rare, naturally low-caffeine species within the broader Coffea family, genetically distinct from Arabica and long cultivated in pockets of South and Southeast Asia. It's naturally low caffeine content contributes to a gentler cup, yet the variety remains expressive, showing vibrant fruit notes. The trees grow tall and require ladder harvesting, one reason many farms removed them in recent decades, but ongoing research and careful field documentation are helping to re-establish Excelsa’s role in the future of Indian speciality coffee.
Mooleh Manay Estate sits near the Harangi Reservoir in Coorg, where Komal and Akshay take a data-driven, experimental approach to farming and fermentation. Their work focuses on native Indian coffee species, soil health and flavour development. Komal & Akshay's process for this coffee includes a sealed fermentation in anaerobic tanks for 84 hours with a yeast-inoculated fermentation.
The result is a characterful low-caf coffee: Syrupy sweetness, gentle spice, and a smooth finish that makes it standout in the cup.
The species Excelsa could become a critical player in the future of coffee - offering not only a unique cup profile but also a low-caffeine, climate-resilient alternative.

What is Lo Caf coffee?
Our Lo Caf coffees are rare coffees that naturally contain less caffeine than typical arabica varieties.
Laurina, a low-caffeine arabica variety, usually contains 0.4% to 0.6% caffeine by weight.
Aramosa, a hybrid of arabica and the low-caffeine species Coffea Racemosa, typically ranges from 0.6% to 1.0%.
Excelsa, a rare species of coffee gaining in popularity due to it's climate resilience, typically has caffeine content of 0.8 to 1.0%
For comparison, most arabica coffees contain 1.4% to 1.6%. These low-caffeine plants are harder to grow—since caffeine helps defend against pests—which makes Lo Caf coffees both distinctive and limited in supply.
For our Lo Caf coffees we lab test our raw (‘green’) coffee for caffeine content before roasting. Testing is conducted using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) – a widely used analytical technique for separating and quantifying compounds in food and drink.

What our customers say about our Lo Caf coffees
Great aromatic and tasty low caf beans, very pleasant as the second cup of the day or even the first.
This Laurina has a fruity, tangy, slightly acidic taste (in a good way!).
I grind this coffee at level 12 to 14 on a Niche Zero (medium fine espresso level), 17g, extract 36ml in about 15-20 seconds, including a 5 second pre-infusion. Drinking as a flat white with oat milk.
In terms of caffeine levels, I definitely feel more of an uplift than with the previous Laurina sold here (Panama). It’s a great balance for those who want a tasty coffee that picks them up without making them too wired. I absolutely love Laurina coffees and especially fruity ones so this is good for me.
They’re “metropolitan millennial problems” for sure but my tastebuds have become pretty “numb” to most coffee varieties these days. My partner works for a roastery, so I’m constantly exposed to a rotation of different coffee varieties, but after a while, they all start to blur together.
But this is the first coffee in a long time that’s actually stood out. Calm has really nailed the story tasting notes, not just for this one but for a couple of others I’ve tried too, because for once, I can actually TASTE what’s been described.
The Daterra is just a gorgeous coffee. It’s smooth, rich, and full of flavor, perfect for an early morning start or a mid-afternoon pick-me-up without the jittery buzz. It really does feel like a treat when I’m setting it up for drinking!
I am loving this coffee at the moment, it tastes beautifully fruity. I have been brewing this with my aromaboy filter brewer and it's the perfect afternoon pick me up without being too much!
A happy compromise for my wife who normally drinks decaf and myself who would opt for full caf. Much better than having to make two brews.
