Coffee production in South Sudan was largely wiped out by the Second Sudanese Civil War in the 1980s. Equatoria Coffee began replanting in 2018 - introducing coffee as a faster-maturing income stream alongside their long-term teak operation, which takes 25 years to reach harvest against coffee's three. The company now runs an 82-hectare plantation in Nzara County alongside a washing station and dry mill, and works with approximately 1,500 smallholder farmers across the region - supplying seedlings, training and direct access to international buyers. Farmers receive a base price for their coffee, topped up with further profit once it's sold.
The Excelsa grown here is indigenous to South Sudan - a fact confirmed through genetic testing by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, which also identified high genetic diversity in the variety. It's a hardy, disease-resistant species, well suited to the region's unpredictable rainfall, and distinct enough from arabica that it brings an entirely different character to the cup.
This lot is processed as an anaerobic honey - whole cherries are fermented in sealed tanks for 48–64 hours before being pulped and dried. This Excelsa has a character all of its own, smooth and mellow, low on acidity, with nutty sweetness and an unusual complexity that speaks to its wild, indigenous origins.
Brewing Tip
We find Excelsa can benefit from a little more rest than most coffees - around two weeks after the roast date is the best time to start brewing.

What is Low Caf coffee?
Our Low Caf coffees are rare coffees that naturally contain less caffeine than typical arabica varieties.
Laurina, an ultra low-caffeine arabica variety, usually contains 0.4% to 0.6% caffeine.
Aramosa, a hybrid of arabica and the low-caffeine species Coffea Racemosa, typically ranges from 0.6% to 1.0%.
Excelsa, a rare species of coffee gaining in popularity due to it's climate resilience, typically has caffeine content of 0.8 to 1.0%
For comparison, most arabica coffees contain 1.4% to 1.6%. These low-caffeine plants are harder to grow - since caffeine helps defend against pests - which makes Low Caf coffees both distinctive and limited in supply.
For our Low Caf coffees we lab test the raw (‘green’) coffee for caffeine content before roasting. Testing is conducted using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) – a widely used analytical technique for separating and quantifying compounds in food and drink.

What our customers say about our Low Caf coffees
Earthy, but not overly bitter. Nice juicy acidity, in balanced proportion to the other notes. Definitely benefits from the extra week's rest for the flavours to come together. Aeropress gives a clean, light cup, whilst cafetiere lets a bit more depth come through. Overall, Interesting and flavourful, with a gentle caffeine lift. This is what I was looking for - to enjoy more cups of delicious coffee throughout the day, without getting the jitters!
Delicious coffee with full and delicate flavours and a perfect low concentration of caffeine
Big thanks to Will for making this amazing coffee available!
After years of being on and off coffee because of side effects, I could immediately tell this was the one that could finally stay.
I was prepared to sacrifice some taste for the lower caffeine and higher-quality bean, but that clearly wasn’t the case as it’s the best tasting coffee I’ve ever had!
Floral and fruity, with a lovely mouthfeel, zero jitters & it's not disrupted my sleep at all (even when having a mid-afternoon coffee).
I love this coffee! Not only is it low in caffeine but it tastes great too! And a huge thanks to Calm Roasters for their friendly service!
