What is Lo Caf Coffee?

Our Lo Caf coffees are rare coffees that naturally contain less caffeine than typical arabica varieties.

Laurina, an ultra ow-caffeine arabica variety, usually contains 0.4% to 0.6% caffeine by weight.

Aramosa, a hybrid of arabica and the low-caffeine species Coffea Racemosa, typically ranges from 0.6% to 1.0%.

Excelsa, a rare species of coffee gaining in popularity due to it's climate resilience, typically has caffeine content of 0.8 to 1.0%

For comparison, most arabica coffees contain 1.4% to 1.6%. These low-caffeine plants are harder to grow - since caffeine helps defend against pests - which makes Lo Caf coffees both distinctive and limited in supply.

For our Lo Caf coffees we lab test our raw (‘green’) coffee for caffeine content before roasting. Testing is conducted using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) – a widely used analytical technique for separating and quantifying compounds in food and drink.

Subscription FAQ's

How do I manage my subscription?

You can manage your subscription from your customer portal - this can be accessed from the email you received when you first subscribed. Email us at hello@calmcoffeeroastery.co.uk if you are having trouble and we can resend your customer portal link or alter your subscription for you.

What coffee will I receive?

Coffee is seasonal, so our coffee selection changes through the year to reflect this. The current coffee for this subscription is detailed above.

How much caffeine is in low caffeine coffee?

It depends on the coffee, which is why we test each one. Most regular arabica coffee contains around 1.4% to 1.6% caffeine by weight. Our Explorer lo caf coffees typically test between 0.6% and 1.0% — roughly half the caffeine of a normal coffee. Our ultra-low Rarities coffees typically test between 0.4% and 0.6%. The tested figure for the current coffee is shown on the product page.

What is the difference between the Explorer and Rarities tiers?

Both are naturally low caffeine and both are lab tested. Explorer is our core tier, with coffees typically testing between 0.6% and 1.0% caffeine, drawing on coffees such as Laurina hybrids, Aramosa and Excelsa. Rarities is our ultra-low tier, typically 0.4% to 0.6% caffeine, focused on the rare Laurina variety. Rarities coffees are scarcer, which is reflected in the price.

Can I drink low caffeine coffee if I'm pregnant or sensitive to caffeine?

Our lo caf coffees contain less caffeine than regular coffee, but they are not caffeine free. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or managing a medical condition, we would always suggest checking your recommended caffeine intake with your GP or midwife. Because every lo caf coffee is tested for caffeine, you can see exactly what you are drinking and make an informed choice.

What is Laurina coffee?

Laurina is a rare, naturally low caffeine variety of arabica. It contains roughly 0.4% to 0.6% caffeine by weight - far less than ordinary arabica - and is prized for its delicate, sweet cup. Because it is difficult to grow and low yielding, it is uncommon and limited in supply. It forms the basis of our ultra-low Rarities subscription.

Is low caffeine coffee the same as decaf?

No. Decaf is regular coffee that has had its caffeine removed by a decaffeination process, leaving almost none behind. Naturally low caffeine ('lo caf') coffee comes from rare coffee varieties or species that contain less caffeine to begin with - nothing is removed. Each one is lab tested so you know its exact caffeine level.
