On the volcanic slopes of Mount Ijen in East Java, producer Supriyanto cultivates a small plot of a rare Laurina hybrid.

Producer: Supriyanto

Variety: Laurina Hybrid

Process: Natural + Anaerobic Fermentation

Region: East Java

Elevation: 1700m

Harvest: October 2025

Caffeine Level: 0.94% (green coffee)

This coffee was developed through cross-breeding by the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute, allowing the traditionally delicate Laurina variety to grow successfully in Indonesia while expressing a slightly different character - including a little more caffeine than typical for the variety.

After harvest, the cherries undergo an anaerobic natural process. The whole cherries are sealed in tanks for a controlled fermentation before being dried naturally.

The result is a lively but balanced Lo Caf coffee, with citrus brightness, soft fruit notes and a rounded brown-sugar sweetness. The lighter roast highlights its delicate character and makes it particularly suited to filter brewing.

What is Lo Caf coffee?

Our Low Caf coffees are rare coffees that naturally contain less caffeine than typical arabica varieties.

Laurina, an ultra low-caffeine arabica variety, usually contains 0.4% to 0.6% caffeine.

Aramosa, a hybrid of arabica and the low-caffeine species Coffea Racemosa, typically ranges from 0.6% to 1.0%.

Excelsa, a rare species of coffee gaining in popularity due to it's climate resilience, typically has caffeine content of 0.8 to 1.0%

For comparison, most arabica coffees contain 1.4% to 1.6%. These low-caffeine plants are harder to grow - since caffeine helps defend against pests - which makes Lo Caf coffees both distinctive and limited in supply.

For our Low Caf coffees we lab test the raw (‘green’) coffee for caffeine content before roasting. Testing is conducted using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) – a widely used analytical technique for separating and quantifying compounds in food and drink.
