The Coffees

Low Caf Excelsa

Excelsa is a rare coffee species indigenous to Uganda and South Sudan, where it occurs naturally in low-elevation forests. One of its defining characteristics is the tree’s growth habit: excelsa trees grow tall, requiring farmers to climb ladders to harvest the fruit.

In the cup, excelsa is often described as having low bitterness, and vibrant fruitiness. As well as being low in caffeine - it typically contains 0.8–1.0% caffeine by weight - it also thrives in hotter and drier climates compared to arabica.

The Coffees

The Rare Hybrid Aramosa

Aramosa is a rare hybrid of two coffee species - Coffea arabica and the low-caffeine species Coffea racemosa. The racemosa species is native to parts of southeastern Africa, and was purposefully crossbred with arabica because of its natural resistance to coffee leaf rust. Aramosa typically contains just 0.6-1.0% caffeine by weight, compared to 1.4-1.6% for normal arabica coffees.

The Caffeine Content

Lab tested for caffeine

We lab test the raw (green) coffee beans for caffeine content before roasting. Testing is conducted using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) – a widely used analytical technique for separating and quantifying compounds in food and drink.

Your brew

The caffeine calculator

We've created a simple caffeine calculator to help you estimate the amount of caffeine in your brew. The caffeine content in your cup depends on three things: the caffeine in the coffee you start with, the dose you use, and the brew method.
